Income Tax Overview

Individuals living within the Village limits and/or performing work within the Village are responsible for filling out a questionnaire and filing an income tax return with the Village of Garrettsville.   Individuals under 18 years of age are exempt from paying municipal income tax.

There is currently a 1.75% income tax on all salaries, wages, commissions and other financial compensation for everyone who lives in or performs work within the Village.

Income tax returns are due April 15th each year; however, when the Governor of Ohio changes the filing date for the state, Garrettsville will adopt the same filing date.

There are several ways to file your annual Garrettsville Income Tax return:

1)  Download, print and complete the Income Tax Return here; Mail to:  8213 High St., Garrettsville, OH. 44231

2)  Email W-2s or any earned income forms (ie. Schedule C, E, 1099, W-2G) to incometax@garrettsville.org

3)  Drop off all forms at Village Hall:  8213 High Street

You will receive a 50% credit for taxes paid to another city up to 1.75%. There is a penalty of 1% per month (18% per year) for each month that a final return is not filed.  A $25 fee (up to $150) is applied monthly for returns filed late.  There is also a .83% per month (10% per year) interest fee charged on all unpaid balances.

James A. Garfield School District Income Tax

The Ohio school district income tax, which was levied with voter approval in November, 2018, generates revenue to support our local school system.  This tax is in addition to and separate from any federal, state, and local income or property tax.

The school district income tax is paid directly to the State of Ohio.  For more information and filing instructions, please go to the Ohio Department of Taxation website or by calling 1-800-282-1780.

How Does Income Tax Revenue Help The Village?

Approximately 66% of the Village’s income is derived from taxes collected. This income maintains three parks, two cemeteries and the street lights. It provides 24 hour police protection and the maintenance of the streets, including paving, repairs, and plowing of the streets and sidewalks. The Village collects branch clippings on the first Monday of each month April through November. This income provides for spring and fall cleanups for the Village residents. It also provides for the repair and upkeep of the storm sewers.

As you can see, there are many uses for the money received from the income taxes, all of which are beneficial to the residents of Garrettsville. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our office @ 330.527.2179.
